Join us as a member to engage in social gatherings and learning experiences, as well as connect with others and forge new friendships.
2024
The newly elected board of directors is dedicated to revitalizing the Society in a way that resonates with individuals aged 55 and above. A fresh vision, mission, and set of core values have been crafted to guide this transformation. Reflecting this progress, the organization has rebranded itself as the Squamish 55+ Community Society in April 2024.
While maintaining a commitment to collaborate with the District of Squamish, it has been acknowledged that repurposing the 55 Activity Centre is underway, prioritizing recreational programs for children, youth, and adults. Consequently, adaptations are being made due to reduced access to the facility as the District’s attention shifts towards these new priorities.
2017
The District of Squamish, which owns and operates the facility, changed the name from Squamish Seniors Centre to 55 Activity Centre.
For a number of years, the Society has been partnered with the District of Squamish in an advisory capacity related to recreational and physical well-being activities for seniors (55+) offered through Brennan Park Recreation Centre, the 55 Activity Centre and Westwinds.
2009
In 2009, the organization transitioned to the Squamish Seniors Centre Society from its prior name, Tantalus Seniors Centre Society. The main objective during this period was aimed at supporting the establishment and management of a centre offering recreational, educational, and social programs for seniors residing in Squamish. Subsequently, efforts were initiated by the Society to advocate with the District of Squamish for a specialized facility catering to senior citizen’s needs.
Following a land exchange agreement with a nearby developer, the District of Squamish initiated the development of a custom-built establishment in collaboration with the Society to cater to the long-term requirements for seniors in the area. Through the Society’s volunteer efforts, substantial grants, and support from local collaborators, the Squamish Seniors Centre was established.
1993
The Tantalus Seniors Centre Society was founded on May 20, 1993, and officially registered under that name. Over the years, the Society operated out of a modest facility where members gathered for social events and activities.
